As the hub for all national and international travel, Beijing Capital
Airport has seen its role as a center for aviation grow considerably
since the development of its initial airport in early 1950s. The deve-lopment
of a new airport to serve Beijing was identified as one of the key
projects during the ninth five-year development plan of the nation,
covering the period 1995-1999. Beijing air traffic volume currently
represents the largest market share in China, accounting for 15% of
the national air transportation market.
In
October 1999, after a five year construction period, and through
the financial and project advisory assistance of China Development
Bank and se-veral other institutions, Beijing Capital Airport officially
opened for business. This airport has been designed to handle over
35 million passengers a year, a significant improvement over the
capacity of the old airport, with station buildings and parking
facilities among the most modern and advanced in China.
