Urban Transportation Upgrades to Support Beijing's Olympic Bid

One of the most talked-about initiatives undertaken by the Chinese government, and a significant portion of China's people, is the desire to host the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Under this effort, City management is undertaking significant infrastructure improvement projects to projects to prepare the city for the anticipated crowds of international visitors.

To ease the congested traffic of Beijing, CDB has provided loans of more than RMB 4.65 billion to help with the construction of the Fourth Ring Road of the city.

The Fourth Ring will be the backbone in Beijing's transportation network system, with a total length of 65.26 kilometers. The Fourth Ring will provide a fast and high-capacity transportation corridor that links the Jingjintang Expressway, Jingshi Expressway, Badaling Expressway and Capital Airport Expressway. It will ease the traffic burdens of the city and improve the travel conditions of the urban-suburban-suburban region so as to play an important role in promoting the development of regional economy. The Fourth Ring Road will also be one of the primary traffic routes for visitors to the Games to reach the Olympic Village and various games venues.

The 15.76 kilo East Fourth Ring was completed in August 1999 and has been in service since. The South, West and North Fourth Rings total 49.5 kilometers in length. The South Fourth Ring was open to traffic in September 2000, the North Fourth Ring in November 2000. The West Fourth Ring was opened to traffic in June 2001.
