| Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, is one of the key cities
in southwestern China, serving as home for 10.04 million people. The
airport serving Chengdu, known as Shuangliu International Airport,
was first built in the 1950's. The continuation of the Western China
development campaign has led to a significant increase in air traffic
that has severely taxed the capacity of the old airport.
Beginning
in 2000, the airport is undergoing a large-scale expansion for the
successful implementation of the national strategy. CDB has provided
a RMB 1,076 million loan for the project, which will be completed
by October 2001.
After the completion of the expansion project, the airport will
have a capacity of 173 daily flights, an annual cargo capacity of
185,000 tons and will be able to serve 6.3 million passengers every
year.
The expansion project is a high-profile project of the Sichuan
provincial government. After the completion of the project, the
crowded and outdated airport will be replaced by
a modern, full-service airport, which will provide better and more efficient
air transportation services to Western China.
